By Libby George and Karin Strohecker LONDON (Reuters) – The punishing post-COVID wave of sovereign defaults has finally crested, with the likes of Ghana, Sri Lanka and Zambia concluding years of painful debt reworks. But the International Monetary Fund and others worry that a dangerous liquidity shortfall could take its place in many emerging economies – setting back development, stunting climate change mitigation and fuelling distrust in governments and Western institutions. The issue, and what to do about it when western countries are increasingly loath to send money overseas, is a key topic at the IMF World Bank autumn meetings…

Last year was humbling for economists and investment strategists alike. It began with an “imminent” recession and ended with equity markets near all-time highs. Historic rate hikes fueled a compelling narrative that, at best, anticipated both a weak economy and disappointing returns. To be sure, legitimate concerns underpinned this narrative. Post-COVID-19, amid resurgent inflation, the world was still emerging from an era of “unprecedented everything.” But the inherent pressure to take a stance on the economic trajectory led many investors to find comfort in collective concern and embrace the prevailing storyline. For many investors, human nature took the wheel. So,…

U.S. futures also were mixed and oil prices climbed.Hong Kong’s Hang Seng sank 1.5% to 20,869.39, while the Shanghai Composite gained 0.2% to 3,268.11. The A-share index of the smaller market in Shenzhen picked up 1.6%.China cut its one-year and five-year Loan Prime Rates, which are reference rates for lending. Image source: Getty Images AstraZeneca’s (LSE: AZN) share price is down 11% from its 3 September 12-month traded high of £133.38. Such a drop raises the question to me of whether a bargain is to be had here. Are the shares undervalued? My starting point in ascertaining whether the shares are underpriced is to look at key stock valuation measures. On the first of these — the price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) — AstraZeneca is bottom of the list of its competitors. It trades at a P/E of just 37.6 compared to an average of 64.6 for its peers. So it looks very cheap…

Image source: Getty Images Shares in FTSE 100 commodities giant Rio Tinto (LSE: RIO) have dropped 15% from their 28 December 12-month traded high of £59.08. This was in line with bearishness in the sector primarily caused by weak ongoing demand from China. The country has been the world’s biggest buyer of the commodities required to power its economic growth. But the scale of its ongoing expansion has appeared less certain since its Covid years. A big deal? One lesson I learned as an investment bank trader was to buy long-term bullish assets during bearish market pricing periods. And this…

In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it’s worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But in any portfolio, there will be mixed results between individual stocks. So we wouldn’t blame long term Hamburger Hafen und Logistik Aktiengesellschaft (ETR:HHFA) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 27% over a half decade. It’s worthwhile assessing if the company’s economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let’s do just that. See our latest analysis for Hamburger Hafen und…
