TimesSquare Capital Management, an equity investment management company, released its “U.S. Mid Cap Growth Strategy” second-quarter investor letter. A copy of the same can be downloaded here. The equity markets performed well in the second quarter, as long as one held only a small number of the biggest, fastest-growing U.S. stocks. Given the Magnificent Seven’s superior performance, differences in growth and value among large caps were downplayed. There wasn’t much style diversity between mid-caps, small caps, or outside the U.S. In the second quarter, the strategy returned -2.94% (gross) and -3.14% (net) while the Russell Midcap Growth Index returned -3.21%.…

Tired of glancing at the same old macOS Dock every day? While you’ll find multiple ways to customize your Mac’s Dock when you head to System Settings, there are certain hidden settings you can only activate using the Terminal app. 1 Tweaking the Dock Size Before you can customize your Mac’s Dock, you’ll need to open the Terminal on your Mac. While there are many ways to open Terminal, my preferred method is using Spotlight Search. To do so, press both the Cmd and Space keys. Then, type “Terminal” and hit Return (or Enter). While you can adjust the Dock’s…

After a series of very public setbacks, self-driving car manufacturer Waymo is releasing reams of safety data in hopes that transparency will rebuild consumer confidence (The Verge). Meanwhile,Tesla employees have been literally teaching its cars to disobey traffic laws in “autopilot” mode, reasoning that they want the cars to act more like humans (Business Insider). The libertarian magazine Reason argues that cities shouldn’t be regulated because they’re popular, without ever examining any of the reasons why. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finally announced this week that it will do what I and others have been prodding it to do for years: force vehicle makers to consider pedestrian safety. The new “standard” — the details of which aren’t 100 percent final and are very wonky and voluminous — will require auto makers to meet certain thresholds for adult and child head impacts. This means they will have to design their hoods/front ends to be more “forgiving” in the event of a pedestrian crash. RecommendedThis is what car makers have done in the European Union since 2009. And what…
This piece originally appeared on How Things Work and is reprinted with permission. There is much beauty in America. Yet, on average, America is an ugly country. The median American scene, the one that illustrates the most typical view of the most typical place, would be an exhaust-choked roadway flanked on both sides by fast food restaurants and big box stores. This is what we have done with our purple mountains, majesty, from sea to shining sea. The culprit is the car. More specifically, the culprit is America’s decision to design our cities around the car. Predicting the future is almost impossible, but one…
U.S. residents are more likely to shrug off the preventable public health impacts of car domination than they are to excuse the dangers of poorly regulated workplaces, lax secondhand smoking policies, and the negative consequences of drinking, a new study finds — and that “windshield bias” isn’t a uniquely American problem, either. In a new paper, Texas A&M researcher Tara Goddard recreated a famous 2023 U.K. study that sought to quantify just how much Britons are affected by “motonormativity,” a term coined by researcher Ian Walker to describe how our collective cultural biases towards car travel shape the way we…
The Biden administration awarded more than $1 billion in grants for 354 traffic safety projects around the country, such as fixing an intersection near a park in Memphis’ historically Black Orange Mound neighborhood. (Route Fifty) Events like Burning Man show that adding more electric vehicle chargers does nothing to prevent congestion, blunting the environmental impact of EVs.
